There's always something we want to become, some version of ourselves we wish we were. Here's how to actually become your Future Self.
Step One: Decide
Who exactly do you want to be? Let's define that person. . .
How do you feel when you wake up in the morning?
What kind of foods do you eat?
How are your free days spent?
What are your hobbies?
What kind of clothing do you wear?
Who do you surround yourself with?
Where do you gain your income?
What kind of partner/lover/friend are you?
You might already have a vision of who you want to be in your head. Maybe you're more patient; maybe you have a dog; you have more free time; you read more; you eat healthy foods; you're taking a class; you're doing your dream job; you're more authentically you.
Visualize this version of you.
Step Two: Spot the Difference
Identify the habits you need to break, the habits you need to start, and what tools might be missing.
What are you doing now that your Future Self would never do? What attitudes or habits do you currently have that are indulgent and toxic?
What would your Future Self do that you're not currently doing? Do they have a different perspective, or have new thought patterns?
Chances are that you know exactly what the difference is between you today and your ideal Future Self. But if not, take the time to think them through. Write them down, if you want.
Step Three: Decide
Choose the Future Self option.
Now start paying attention to the moment of choice. So often our ingrained habits don't feel like choices, we just do them. But if you can catch yourself choosing the bad habit, then you can choose the good one instead. I know it's not always easy, but once you catch yourself making the choice you're empowered.
Sometimes you'll pick what you know, and it won't be inline with your Future Self and that's okay. Decide to choose better next time.
Step Four: Be the Future
Continue to choose the Future Self option until it's the unconscious choice, until it's the default.
This essentially boils down to fake it until you make it. You need to wake up with a smile, and choose the fight. No one else is going to make these choices for you, no one is going to fight for you. If you really want to be your ideal Future Self, then you need to start today.
It's a struggle, you have to pay attention, and it'll require a push. But by knowing who you want to be, seeing the difference, identifying the moment of choice and fighting to pick the new path, you can start being who you've always wanted to be as of today.
